SILCHAR: Yet another youth was arrested by Cachar police in connection with the Bethukandi dyke breach which caused a massive flood in Silchar. Raju Deb, 26, a resident of Bethukandi area arrested by police and later he was sent to police custody by a Silchar court on Wednesday. Deb was arrested against a complaint lodged by the Water Resources department after the dyke was breached reportedly on May 22 midnight.

District police was surprisingly inactive till the damage of dyke caused inundation of almost the entire town in the third week of June. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma later ordered a CID inquiry into the episode of dyke breach. Interestingly just after Sarma's order, Silchar police swung into action and on the same day the first arrest was made. Before the CID team arrived at Silchar, district police had arrested three more persons including a Water Resources department contractor. The Chief Minister Sarma during his visit to Silchar said, names of six persons could so far be ascertained. Raju Deb was the fifth person arrested in Bethukandi case.
